Volusia County, FL- Men and women interested in a career in public protection have an
opportunity to join Volusia County’s Division of Corrections.
The division will host a career fair at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at
the Volusia County Branch Jail, 1300 Red John Drive, Daytona Beach.
Attendees will meet with staff, tour the facility, and learn about
benefits and job responsibilities. They can also fill out an application
and begin the pre-screening process.
The Volusia County Branch Jail and adjacent Volusia County Correctional
Facility has nearly 300 sworn officers who supervise an average daily
inmate population of 1,500 inmates.
“Corrections is a critical component of the justice system,” noted
Mark Flowers, director of the Division of Corrections. “A career in
corrections requires dedication, integrity and a commitment to
supervising individuals who enter the justice system. The rewards can be
gratifying as you help people make real life changes and turn their
lives around.”
He added that the division offers promotion opportunities and a full
slate of benefits, including health insurance and enrollment in the
special risk class of the Florida Retirement System.
Officer trainees are paid $14.62 an hour as they undergo 420 hours of
academy training in interpersonal skills, legal issues, first response,
emergency preparedness, correctional operations, defensive tactics, and
the safe use of firearms. Upon becoming a certified corrections officer,
the pay is increased to $16.17 an hour.
Positions are also open for booking technicians, supervisors,
experienced corrections officers, and part-time and intermittent
officers.
Applicants must be at least 19 years old, tobacco-free, and in good
physical condition. They also must have a Florida driver’s license and
a high school diploma or GED certificate. They cannot have a felony or
misdemeanor conviction involving moral character, perjury or false
statements.
