DeLand, FL - The state of Florida and local governments, including Volusia County, are eligible for federal reimbursements regarding Hurricane Dorian preparations. Volusia County Interim Community Information Director Kevin Captain said the declaration by Federal Emergency Management Agency that Dorian is a reimbursable event came out last week.
In September, after Hurricane Dorian passed through, Governor Ron DeSantis, requested assistance from FEMA to cover expenses tied to shelters, removal of health and safety hazards and evacuation procedures. Captain said that even though Dorian skipped Florida's East Coast, Volusia County incurred $1.5 million in reimbursable costs.
Captain said the county is working with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to validate the county and city costs to be added to the declaration.
In requesting money for the state of Florida, both U.S. Senators from Florida, Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, backed DeSantis request, advising the federal government that approximately $197.3 million was spent by the state and 24 counties in preparation for Dorian.
