Volusia County, FL - Volusia County's Beach Safety Division is expecting big crowds, hazardous rip currents and midday high tides during the upcoming Easter weekend.
Special events that will affect traffic include the Easter Beach Run, which starts at the Daytona Beach Bandshell at 8 AM, and several sunrise services on Sunday morning.
High tides could force lifeguards to close the beach to vehicular traffic intermittently. Beachgoers are encouraged to visit the less congested areas and arrive early for easier access. Beachgoers who encounter a closed beach approach can check the beach navigator app for beach conditions and open approaches. Beach ramps need to be closed 2 to 4 hours due to the tides. Off-beach parking is available at designated locations from Ormond-by-the-Sea to New Smyrna Beach.
Beachgoers should swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower and should not sit or lie between vehicles.
Alcohol and plastic cups are prohibited.
Parents with small children may want to opt for 1 of the county's traffic-free zones. Parents should always hold their children's hands when crossing the traffic lane.
According to beach officials, on a busy day 7-10 kids get lost from their parents. Free RES-Q (Reuniting Everyone Safely and Quickly) bracelets may be picked up at the lifeguard towers. Parents can write their name and phone number on the bracelet before placing it on the child's wrist. If the child wanders off, Beach Safety staff can use the phone number to contact the parents quickly.
The beach navigator app and beach maps are available here.
