Volusia and Flagler Counties - The grades recently released by the Florida Department of Education indicate that Volusia and Flagler County Schools have received a 'B' district grade for the year.

Volusia County maintained their 'B' status as 56% of the schools earned an 'A' or a 'B' grade, which is up 16% from 2016. Schools awarded an 'A' increased 36% while the number of 'D' schools went down.

“As a district, we have made a concerted effort to make instructional shifts that are essential to teach students at the rigor of the standards. Our students and teachers rose to the occasion to meet the demands of these rigorous tests,” says Tom Russel, Superintendent of Volusia County Schools. “We are very happy that Volusia maintained a B district grade and are making progress toward our goal of an 'A' district.”

Coronado Beach Elementary in New Smyrna Beach and Turie T. Small Elementary in Daytona Beach increased their school grades by two letter grades, from a 'C' to an 'A' and from a 'D' to a 'B,' respectively.

In Volusia, there were 11 'A' schools, 29 'B' schools, 28 'C' schools, 3 'D' schools, 0 'F' schools and 1 'I' school.

Flagler County maintained their 6th year of being a 'B' grade district as they earned 646 points during the school grading process. This score means that the Flagler County School District ranks in the top 20 school districts in Florida at #17, just a point shy of ranking #16. This is a jump from their 28th place rank in 2016.

“The fact that our scores rose in all measurables when compared to last year is a testament to the hard work of our students, teachers, staff, and administrators," says James Tager, Superintendent of Flagler County Schools. "And while we celebrate the achievements, we also know we have room for improvement in many areas. In the coming days and weeks, we will look deeper into these numbers and identify ways we can make this an ‘A’ District once again.”

The following are Flagler schools and their respective grades:

  • Old Kings Elementary - 'A' (up from a 2016 grade of 'C')
