Charges sent to the State Attorney's Office for review

Edgewater, FL - An update from the Volusia Sheriff's Office says two horses that were found emaciated seem to be recovering well.

And their former owner could now be facing charges.

The horses, two Arabian mares named Tiffany and Niagra, were seized from their home off of Clinton Cemetery Road back on December 11th. That's after their owner, who has been identified as 41-year-old Anthony Cartrette, signed over the ownership of both horses to the Sheriff's Office.

Both Tiffany and Niagra were found to be emaciated and at least 400 pounds underweight from the normal 900 pounds they should weigh, according to VSO. Both horses were taken to an undisclosed location and are now under the care of a veterinarian, who remains unidentified.

Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood visited both horses earlier this week and gave an update on their conditions.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Cartrette now faces two counts of cruelty to animals and two counts of confinement of animals without sufficient food and water. They confirmed that his charges have been forwarded to the State Attorney's Office where they will be reviewed.
