Washington Ave. In Pierson Shut Down For Fatal Accident This Morning

UPDATE: The victim, who is identified as 43-year-old Rebecca Bird, and her dog were pronounced deceased at the scene when paramedics arrived.

The preliminary investigation of the crash indicates Bird drove her vehicle, a Chrysler minivan, under the railroad crossing arm, which was down and flashing red, and collided with the front of the train.

Pierson, FL - One person is dead and Washington Avenue in Pierson is shut down today near Volusia Avenue as Volusia Sheriff's Office (VSO) deputies investigate an accident involving an Amtrak train and a vehicle, reported at 7:40 a.m.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that troopers responded at around 8:20 a.m. and then handed it over to VSO after 9 a.m.

It's unclear if the person pronounced dead was in the vehicle involved in the crash or if they might have been a pedestrian. At thie time, it's not known how many passengers were on the train or if any suffered injuries.
