Two women were hospitalized after being hit by a Volusia County Beach Safety sergeant in Daytona Beach on Monday. 37-year-old Sergeant Arthur Gendreau was reportedly in a marked patrol vehicle when the impact occurred.
The women were said to be laying on the beach while Gendreau was parked next to a coworker, speaking with them through his driver window. At some point he started driving his vehicle and hit the two women.
Both women received care at the scene from Gendreau and other nearby responders, before being hospitalized for their injuries. As stated in a report by the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Gendreau was cited for reckless driving but has not been criminally charged according to interim Beach Safety Director Tamara Malphurs.
Still, the Volusia Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation into the incident. It appears any further action against Gendreau will likely be disciplinary in nature and be administered by his employers, as opposed to criminal prosecution.
