Argument Over Motorcycle Led to Man Shooting Wife, Police Say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The fatal shooting of a Daytona Beach woman last week started with an argument over a motorcycle with her husband, police say. The shooting, which happened on Thursday, has resulted in 35-year-old Shantell Adkins being arrested on a first degree murder charge.

The Daytona Beach Police Department released Adkins' arrest report on Monday, expanding on the circumstances of the murder. According to that report, Adkins and his late wife Shawntai Adkins were arguing about Shantell purportedly riding his motorcycle drunk. As the argument became heated, Shawntai is said to have called her parents for assistance.

Soon thereafter, Shantell is said to have grabbed a rifle and shot Shawntai in the head, then himself. A third individual is said to have been at the scene, but they were not shot. Police say this third person tried to jump a fence running from the scene of the shooting. One of the responding officers reported hearing a gunshot but it's not clear what part in the incident this would've been.

Another person, whose name was not provided in the report, picked up the rifle used in Shawntai's killing and brought it in the direction of the house. Shawntai was found lying on the ground near the front door, and Shantell was treated for his injuries after also being found wounded on the ground.
