Suspect In 30-Year-Old Cold Case Set For Plea Hearing

Daytona Beach, FL - The suspect in a thirty-year-old cold case murder that took the life of 88-year-old Whitney Gunn of New Smyrna Beach has a plea hearing scheduled on Monday, June 22.

Young was indicted in June of 2018.

That’s according to the State Attorney’s office.  The suspect, 47-year-old Lynn Young, was already serving a life sentence for raping a woman while pretending to be a police officer.

Ms. Gunn survived for three days after her attacker beat, raped and left her for dead. She did not identify the person but police continued to work the case and test DNA evidence periodically to see if it matched anything new coming in. They got a match in 2017 and Young was indicted on the charges in 2018.
