VSO Sergeant Arrested on Domestic Battery Charge

The Volusia Sheriff's Office arrested one of their own on Thursday. Cody Cochran, a sergeant with the Volusia Sheriff's Office, was accused of striking his wife during an argument at their Deltona residence.

A 911 call was placed at around 10:21 am on Thursday, according to a report from the VSO about the incident. Deputies who responded interviewed a witness who claimed to have seen Cochran striking his wife in the face. His wife said she was uninjured and didn't want to pursue charges.

All the same, deputies came to the determination that Cochran's alleged actions during the altercation warranted him being placed under arrest. It's the latest in a series of problems Cochran has had with his employer, with him having already been placed on suspension while two internal affairs investigations looked into unrelated incidents.

Cochran has been an employee of the VSO since 2011, but the agency says it's in the process of terminating him. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Thursday with no bond, pending his first court appearance.

“Domestic violence should not be accepted in our society, and it won't be tolerated in our organization,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood commented on the situation. “While I’m glad the victim in this case wasn’t injured, there's no excuse for domestic violence - especially not for a law enforcement officer sworn to uphold the law.”
